The next chapter of the taco cart saga

On September 4th we will see what is in store. I'm not routing for Jullio or Mike Holt. I'm not hoping that Jullio has to be told to leave his corner. I'm hoping the City can find a compromise that works best for both parties.

Possible Solutions

I talked about a solution that Jullio is in favor of, which would be to add planters along the outside of Holt's building that would keep folks from leaning against his building, dirtying his facade. The smell issue is another problem, short of Holt investing in a vestibule entry way. I can't see how Jullio can stay there without his smoke entering Holt's showroom, which is where the city might have an opportunity to step in.

A secondary, more viable solution would be for the city to offer Jullio an RDA grant to relocate his business in the now vacant spot diretly east of where he now is. Turn his business into a street cafe and cook the food indoors with a grill and proper ventalation so the smell doesn't dissipate into Holt's showroom. Jullio could then maintain his existing customers and that corner could have vegetation planted, with grass and trees and look more like the corner of 300 South and 400 East where Su Casa is. Rocky got the city to invest hundreds of thousands to accomplish "his vision" of putting planters along the now mostly vacant Main Street and 400 South to 200 South. Now its time for the city to step up and invest in a solution to a problem rather than street astehtics.

I think that Sears is the biggest problem in that area. It's a huge box, cement walled building with a large empty parking lot. It would be a blighted area without the taco stands. To claim that the taco stands are creating the blight is absurd. If anything the taco stands give the area a reason of being and adds more people to the area. The city has vastly ignored anything South of 4th and West of Gateway.

I agree thtat the taco stands around Sears should stay. They shouldn't require bathrooms for all taco stands. The city should tax the taco stands to purchase half of Sears parking lot and turn it into a open-air market full of taco stands and vendors.

The problem I see is that the existing business owner(s) who have been in the area for 30+ years, and have invested a considerable ammount to maintain their property (and pay property TAXES)are being forced to watch their neighborhood turn into a ghetto at the hands of a bunch of freeloaders. Sad, really........

i have been a street artist for 15 yrs ,, i fully understand issues store owners have with street vendors , the main issue is always money , or the fear of losing money,, my opinion is that happily we must all except that we are on this planet together , the taco vendors have their licenses, and in mexico street vending is more common then in a building ,, ya they are in north america now , but that doesnt mean that they have taken on our value system,, which is centered on money not family and food (basic needs ) utah especially is lacking in culture, the people who run the taco stands are hardly freeloaders they are at most taking advantage of an affordable business opportunity and probably didnt show to the meeting of grievances because they are not uppity north americans and have no reason to start ,, when you finally succeed in freezing them out of your classy streets and storefronts ,, you will be happily alone in your fight for the almighty dollar and security, save yourself first forget about any one else

I cant believe a ferrari dealer is crying about a taco stand. Your sales team and your thirty year experience in the business is affected by a little dinginess of paint or the smell of a tasty taco??? Last time i saw a ferrari it pretty much sells itself. How about next time take your customer to get a taco and close the deal instead of what i am almost ositive is happening is the taco stands are making more money than you and your jealous. You probably condemn them day in and day out creating a law of negative attraction to yourself. Try a taco next time you wanna bash there business might change the way you feel against them. The world is for all of us and for you to try and take away from them as people and fellow business owners it will come back to you.
